Making it mine

When I first saw my room, before we moved in, I remember thinking to myself "How the heck am I supposed to get all of my stuff in there?!" I had been living in an apartment by myself and had a living room and huge bedroom. Moving in with two other people was a good lesson in downsizing and deciding what is important. I did it for the most part (though I did commandeer a hall closet directly outside of my bedroom that is filled to the brim.)

I've had three weeks off between my previous job and student teaching. The first week I was somewhat productive. I was very social and caught up on meetings and appointments I had been putting off. The second week was much harder- I was bored to tears daily and played a lot of the Sims.

This week has been different. I made a decision to be productive and accomplish things I've been putting off for a while. I've worked on my online courses, reorganized my closet to accommodate my new professional wardrobe, and even cleaned my car with the help of my boyfriend. I also decided to make my bedroom more personal.

I started by posting a new map of the United States above my desk. This will be good for the upcoming year. I also decided on a whim to cut hearts out of maps and string them on my wall. It seemed like a smart idea at the time.
Below is the BIG project that I took on yesterday. I found a bolt of fabric (20 yards!) that I liked at IKEA for $10. Considering that Ikea fabric is usually around $8/yard I jumped on it. What does one do with 20 yards of fabric?

I adhered it to the wall using liquid starch, a rolling brush and thumb tacks. Generally you aren't supposed to have to use tacks (why I used starch in the first place) but I used a heavy canvas material that would not stay on the wall without help. If you use a sheet or lightweight fabric it should stick much easier.

The best part? When I'm done it peels it right off!

Upon the suggestion of my roommate I put fabric on the light switch. It's the same fabric that I used on my mouse pad. I just wrapped them both like presents and used tape on the backs so I could take it off and change the pattern later if I wanted.

My next project?

I need to tackle this ugly wall:
I'm going to make bunting and hang it along the back wall. I have the rest of the week to get it done. I'll post pictures when it's finished.
